Important Labour Relations Developments








Howard Ehrlich has practiced labour and employment law in Vancouver since 1983. He has been a Partner in Bull, Housser & Tupper’s Labour & Employment Law Group since 1988.  An acknowledged expert in his field, Howard has contributed to hundreds of course manuals and journals, and made presentations to a wide variety of clients, professional groups and employment-oriented organizations on labour and employment law issues Howard appears at the Labour Relations Board to represent clients in hearings.  He represents clients in interest and rights arbitrations, human rights hearings, mediations, collective bargaining negotiations and certification drives. He has extensive experience providing strategic advice to clients in all areas of labour and employment law, and advises and represents them in workers’ compensation, employment insurance, employee benefits, wrongful dismissal, unjust dismissal, and employment standards matters.

 

Herb Isherwood is currently the Managing Partner of Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP and spends half his time in that role. With the other half of his time he maintains a busy practice advising employers on labour and employment mattersincluding problem employees, disabilities and absenteeism, corporate reorganization and downsizing, labour negotiations, collective agreement interpretation, labour relations strategy, grievance arbitration, employment standards, wrongful dismissal and human rights.  Herb also advises on executive compensation, incentive plans and employment agreements, including post employment restrictions.

 

Judith Macfarlane was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1996.  From 1997 to 2009 she practiced labour and employment law at a large Vancouver law firm as an associate and then as a partner. Judith represents employers in both the public and private sectors.  She advises municipalities, post secondary institutions, and other public bodies, as well as companies in the telecommunications, transportation, technology, cleantech, food service, and hospitality industries. Judith advises employers with respect to workplace policies and practices, collective agreement interpretation, and other labour and employment matters. She has advised clients in relation to long term disability and other health and welfare plans and programs. She has significant expertise in disability and attendance management, duty to accommodate, and return to work issues.

 

Taryn Mackie joined Bull, Housser & Tupper as an articled student in April 2005 and was called to the bar in February 2006.  As an associate in the firm's Labour & Employment Group, Taryn advises clients on a variety of issues relating to labour relations, human rights, workers' compensation, wrongful dismissals, unjust dismissals, and employment standards.  Taryn has experience preparing employment agreements and workplace policies, including privacy policies, Internet policies, social networking policies, harassment policies, human rights policies, and attendance policies.  Taryn has appeared before the Employment Standards Branch, Human Rights Tribunal, British Columbia Supreme Court, British Columbia Court of Appeal, Federal Court, and Federal Court of Appeal on a variety of matters.
